Cyanotypes

Cyanotype trees and branches is a series of photographs made by combining digital photography with one of the earliest known traditional printing technique - cyanotypes.

Making a glass negative is almost impossible in this age because the glass negatives, as well as its developing technology are outdated and unaffordable. It came upon me to try and make negatives out of plastic transparency sheets which are commonly available in any size. So by inverting a black and white image in photoshop and printing it digitally on a transparency, I was able to make a large size „negative‟. After experimenting with various transparencies, I was able to print cyanotypes of photographs through contact printing up to a size of 16” x 11”.

In this series, my aim was to look for characteristic features of trees which could instill an emotional response in the viewer. The tree branches seem to be dancing against the backdrop of plain sky and the trees stand solo majestically.
